Director of Quality Assurance – Winchester, VA

The Director of Quality Assurance is responsible for ensuring adherence to product specifications, regulatory compliance and organizational policies and procedures by coordinating internal and external resources to achieve product quality goals that focus on customer satisfaction.

Job Skills and Work Environment:

  • Design, develop and implement a comprehensive product quality and food safety programs that results in finished products that meet or exceed customer requirements including audit and tractability control programs;
  • Responsible for ensuring the organization’s compliance with all applicable guidelines, standards and regulatory requirements including: Animal Protein Producers Industry (APPI), American Feed Industry Association (AFIA), and Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO), Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA);
  • Responsible for complying with the organization’s finished product specification standards for finished product customers.
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining the Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) required by FSMA, and Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) as it relates to raw material and finished product;
  • Maintains the safety, legality and quality of each finished product line and the processes used in their manufacture;
  • Investigates customer complaints and develops initiatives to reduce customer complaints and cost of quality issues including the design and implementation of corrective actions;
  • Designs and participates in routine internal plant quality control/assurance audits. Actively participates in inspections (pest control, operations methods, maintenance for FSMA, sanitation, personnel practices, etc.), and will develop and implement a system to log and monitor non-compliance items and resolutions to these items found during routine audits.
  • Coordinate customer audits and customer visits to meet all customer requirements. Work with each facility to develop and implement any corrective actions required by the customers.
  • Supervise a team of quality assurance managers

Qualifications:

  • Strong track record of success in developing and managing product quality and food safety programs in a food manufacturing environment or related industry;
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in food processing/manufacturing with at least 5 years in a senior product quality role; experience managing testing labs a plus;
  • Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Animal Science, Animal Nutrition, Chemistry or related field; master’s degree a plus;
  • Thorough knowledge of related product quality and food safety regulations including FSMA, HACCP, APPI, AFIA, AAFCO, FDA and USDA.
  • Ability to build effective business relationships with operations management and sales. Being able to lead by influence is essential;
  • Excellent personal computer skills in a networked environment, above average skills using all Microsoft products, and SAP experience preferred.
